Glen Campbell – If These Walls Could Speak
I was recently on a Spotify listening binge making the most of the extra time available during lockdown. Whilst listening to Glen Campbell’s song If These Walls Could Speak, from his 1988 album Light Years, I searched online to find more info about the track and the lyrics.
I discovered that, in fact, this song, in addition to many of his others were written by another artist – Jimmy Webb – a renowned American singer songwriter.
Before we take a look at songs which Jimmy Webb wrote, let’s have a listen to Glen Campbell’s version:
The songwriter for If These Walls Could Speak was Jimmy Webb. He also wrote seven other songs on the Light Years album, however their earlier collaborations date back much further.
Campbell first covered a song by Webb in 1967 – By The Time I Get To Phoenix. This was followed by successful recordings of Wichita Lineman, which sold over 1 million copies in America, and the ever popular Galveston.
Despite recording and releasing many of his own albums throughout his career, Webb has had more success as a songwriter than a performer.
Now let’s listen to Jimmy Webb’s rendition of his song If These Walls Could Speak, this time recorded in 1996 for his Ten Easy Pieces album:
Which version do you prefer? Glen Campbell’s or Jimmy Webb’s rendition of his own song?
